"Train yourself on your own time" is usually considered the standard in software (and other areas), but after reading these posts (and another one that I cannot find) awhile back I was wondering if any companies do "specialist training" upon hire:
Certain areas of application security seem like natural fits, but I could see other ones. Especially for companies that claim shortages, this seems like it might not be a terrible bet (despite the well-known risks about people jumping ship), especially if they've been looking for a while / work in an area with too few specialists.
Basically, which, if any, companies hire generalist/specialist-in-other-areas developers and offer them training in a desired speciality upon hire? Who does "trainingball"?
